IMPACT AID FORMS- On Monday, October 2nd your child will be coming home with the annual Impact Aid forms to be completed by parents and returned to LMS. These are very important to our entire district and entitle us to roughly $600K for education. It is essential to receive these back from every student, and your help will be greatly appreciated!

SHREK THE MUSICAL- An informational meeting about the spring drama production, Shrek the Musical Jr., will be held after school in the cafeteria on Monday, October 2nd until 3:15 PM. Any student interested in singing, acting or dancing on stage, or work behind the scenes with sets, props, artwork, costumes, hair and makeup, or help with sound, light and stage crew should plan to attend. Topics being discussed include the audition, rehearsal and performance schedule, and all of the different ways that students can participate. If your child is involved in other after school activities like cross-country or bike club, s/he may get the basic information at the beginning of the meeting and then go to the other activities. Please contact Mr. Reilly, Mrs. Albers, Mrs. Dahl, Mrs. Okosky, or Mrs. Agard if you have any questions.

LMS MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE- On Wednesday, October 4th after school LMS in conjunction with CCAP (Connecticut Cycling Advancement Program) will be hosting a mountain bike race with both a middle school division as well as high school division. We have over twenty kids registered to take part in this awesome event coached by Mrs. Kristen Gallagher. This is the second time since the inception of this club that we have been fortunate to have been able to host an event. For more information please feel free to contact Mrs. Gallagher.

YANKEE CANDLE FUNDRAISER- Eighth grade students will have an additional week to sell candles to earn money for their trip to Gettysburg. All order forms are due by Friday, October 6th. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to pay for this trip. Students earn 40% of their individual sales, In the past we have had a number of students cover the entire cost of the trip. I am still waiting for a firm number from the travel agent, but I can say the cost is very likely to be roughly $440 per student this year. Particularly if any family knows it will be a challenge to come up with this amount, please encourage your child to do her/his best to earn at least a portion of the cost. We will provide one more fundraiser after the new year. And seventh grade parents please stay tuned for the PTC Butterbraid fundraiser later in the year which will serve as an opportunity for your seventh grade child to get a headstart!

HIGH SCHOOL OPTIONS DAY- High School Options – LMS will be holding our annual “High School Options Day” on Friday, October 6th. Although most of our students will be attending Ledyard High School, students have five other opportunities available upon leaving Ledyard Middle School. The following schools will be presenting their programs to students on October 6th: Grasso Tech, Norwich Tech, Agri-Science at LHS, Marine Science HS, Science and Technology Magnet HS. Mrs. Amanda Fagan, principal of Ledyard High School, will also talk to our students. Each of the technical/magnet high schools will have an Open House that you are encouraged to attend if your child is interested in their program. These dates are available on the individual school’s websites. Applications will be available through Guidance on October 6th or most can also be found on the school websites.

ROWING CLUB- The Ledyard Parks & Recreation Department is starting an after-school, co-ed competitive rowing team. Practices will be held every Monday through Thursday from 2:30 - 5 PM. The goal is to take two boats to compete in a five-mile race in Hull, MA, next month. Rowing is the ultimate team sport! Rowing will begin on October 10th. If your child is interested you must register at the Parks & Rec office.

WEEKLY TECH TIP- This week I want to remind you the importance of BALANCE. Check your phone a several times a day.  Remember to look up from your phone and appreciate what is happening around you. Turn your technology off an hour before you go to sleep. The lights and activity affect how well you sleep. Lack of sleep causes many health issues (see the article below).  Try it for a week and you will be more alert, maybe even happier and less anxious. Then keep it up and you will notice a permanent change!
