Guidelines for food and beverages offered to students at school:
The district encourages the use of nutrient dense foods for all school activities and functions. At any school
function (parties, celebrations, feasts, sporting events, etc.) healthy food choice should be encouraged.
Some foods used with appropriate portion control are suggested below:
Raw/fresh vegetable sticks/slices with low-fat dressing or yogurt
Fresh fruit and vegetable 100% juices
Frozen fruit juice pops
Plain bottled water (without flavor additives)
Dried fruit
Trail mix (dried fruits and nuts)
Dry roasted nuts-tree nuts, soy nuts (not coconut or palm nuts)
Low fat meats and cheese sandwiches with low fat mayonnaise or mustard
Party mix (variety of cereals, nuts, pretzels)
Low sodium/fat crackers
Baked corn chips/fat free chips with salsa, onion and bean dips(l oz. bag or less)
Low fat muffins, granola bars, fig bars
Fruit topped angel food and sponge cakes
Low fat yogurt and fruit parfaits and bars
Low fat pudding cups
Low fat ice creams and frozen yogurt
Low fat skim milk products
Pretzels
Low fat popcorn
Whole grain bread products such as bread sticks, rolls, bagels and pita bread
Ready to eat low sugar cereals
Low fat and skim milk
Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value as Defined by the USDA
The consumption of and sale to students of minimal nutrition foods will be restricted at LMS
per decision of administration and Faculty Council.
All confections, i.e., doughnuts, cakes, pastries (proposed to be restricted to two times per year)
Candy (including sugar-free)
Potato chips (allowed in portion controlled bags)
Fruit drinks containing less than 50% pure fruit juice
Tea or coffee
Carbonated beverages
Soda and soda water
Chewing gum (page 7 #12 in front of agenda)
